Now this is another product that I can claim some real authority on.

I’ve had Sony MDR7506’s for over 10 years. I’ve used them for countless studio sessions both for playback and for vocalists, hundreds of live performances as an electronic music artist, and for innumerable sessions as a live sound engineer.

The most incredible thing is – I haven’t managed to destroy them! Really, they have no right to have lasted this long. They’ve been crunched into road cases and stuffed into bags with all kinds of other gear, in all kinds of stressful live performance situations. They’ve travelled thousands of miles and been subjected to all kinds of punishment. The foam has frayed and I have had to replace the ear pads a couple of times – and the cable has stretched considerably – but they work perfectly. Not only has the cable “not died” at the point where it meets the earpieces – a common point of failure in other ‘phones – but the headband shows no sign of damage whatsoever. I love the way these fold up and I think Sony’s ingenious folding mechanism has played a large part in their survival.

Not only this, but they sound absolutely great and go insanely loud. What more could you possibly want for under a hundred bucks?

Of course, you can get better quality headphones if you spend more. But in terms of some “general purpose” cans, these deserve to be on your shopping list. Amazingly, despite being around for over a decade, these are still on the market and you can pick them up on Amazon and eBay or wherever else.

When / if these finally die – I’m going to buy another pair exactly the same. No hesitation. Maybe two or three – because you never know how long a company is going to continue manufacturing a product – and if something is that good, you want to make sure you stock up.
